When you want something, will you do anything to get it? Would you drive 40 miles? Well we did. 40 miles to get a freakshake.
If you don’t know what a freakshake is, then you have clearly been living under a rock for the past few years. Freakshakes have been a regular feature on my Instagram explore page for a couple of years now and after seeing the trend take over social media, I was eager to try one. I had been meaning to for a while, but had never got round to it, until I saw The Beehive Coffee House on Instagram one day.
Freakshakes, aka milkshakes capable of inducing sugar comas, supposedly originated in Australia, but The Beehive Coffee House in Downend, a small suburb in Bristol was one of the first places in the UK to jump on the foodie trend. Beehive is a small, independently run coffee shop specialising in these indulgent treats. Popular with Instagram lovers, Beehive top their shakes with doughnuts, sprinkles, pretzels, marshmallows, whipped cream – pretty much anything sweet and delicious.
With many freakshakes apparently worth over 1,500 calories, these indulgent treats are worth almost your recommended daily calorie intake. But they are worth it. I went for the Reeses peanut butter shake, loaded with whipped cream, peanut butter, chocolate buttons, popcorn, pretzels, marshmallows, a Reeses peanut butter cup and not to forget, a whole doughnut! The mouth-watering shake was only £6.95 and was amazing.
Beehive’s standard shakes are priced at £5.95 and are available all year-round. Whether you want Oreos, Nutella or Jammie Dodgers, they've got it. Or if you fancy something a little bit different? Each week Beehive have a 'Freak of the Week' – a limited edition special shake only available for that week. Their Easter special was topped with half an Easter egg and last week’s special had a whole magnum on top!
The service at Beehive was absolutely excellent. We were only waiting for literally five minutes and our huge shakes arrived. The staff were kind and accommodating and if you'd rather different toppings they will change them for you.
If you have a sweet tooth and fancy a treat, it’s definitely worth looking into The Beehive Coffee House. And even if it is 40 miles from your house, it’s worth the drive!
