Although Cathays is small, it’s bursting with restaurants, pubs, and cafés, with lots of lovely places to get a bite to eat. I’m a massive brunch fan, and there are three independent cafés in the heart of Cathays that I continuously go back to. If you haven’t been to them already, you’re missing out!
Café 37
On Salisbury Road, Café 37 is the perfect spot if you fancy a full English. The all-day breakfast (£4.95) is a hungover favourite, or if you’re really hungry the Café 37 breakfast with all the trimmings (£6.95) is definitely worth a try. Fancy something sweet? The brioche French toast with banana, strawberries and maple syrup (£6.95) is divine! Not feeling brunch? Don’t worry. They also serve jacket potatoes, sandwiches, omelettes, burgers, the lot. The menu is not only extensive, the prices are also great value for money, with a juice, coffee or tea included in the price! Why not try their delicious smoothies or chocolate bar milkshakes? You can’t go wrong with an Energy Refueller smoothie or a Kinder Bueno milkshake.
Do bear in mind that weekends are always very busy – it is normally always crammed with students – so make sure you get there early if you’re hungry!

Early Bird
Early Bird is another brunch favourite of mine. It’s the perfect place for brunch, bakes and brews. A hidden gem located on Woodville Road, it’s quite small so be careful not to miss it! Early Bird is always busy, so make sure you get there early if you’re dining on a weekend. It’s not a surprise that it’s always busy, the food is amazing. Although a small menu, everything on offer is delicious and definitely worth a try. If you fancy something sweet, the ‘Nutella Fitzgerald’ (£7) is delicious, or if you’re feeling something savoury, I would also recommend the ‘Cowboys’ (£7). Want to try something a little bit different? The ‘Don’t worry, brie happy!’ (£7) really is amazing. Whatever you decide, the food is of a high standard and really is top quality. The large portions are definitely worth the price and if you’re visiting Cardiff and fancy some brunch, I would highly recommend a visit.
If you’ve got any room left after your breakfast, their doughnuts are to die for!

Stag Coffee
Another favourite brunch stop of mine is Stag Coffee, on Crwys Road. It’s a small café with a large menu, and the unique décor emits a quirky feel, possessing a relaxed and comforting vibe. They serve fresh, creative, high-quality food that is sensibly priced and delicious – perfect for students. A variety of Vegan and Gluten Free options are also available.
The‘Smashed avo’ with feta is beautiful and is only £4.95! Or if you’d rather something sweet, the buttermilk pancakes with strawberries, blueberries, bananas and maple syrup for £6.95 is worth trying.

Quick service, friendly staff, great prices, and most of all, delicious food. Whether you fancy something savoury or sweet, these three places will definitely have something to tickle your taste buds!
What more could you ask for? So what are you waiting for? Well actually…there’s no rush…they serve brunch all day long! You can’t get better than that! If you live in Cardiff/Cathays, head down to Cafe 37, Early Bird, or Stag Coffee and you will not be disappointed!
